Seat numbering: start left or right?

In short: the direction matters less than using one system throughout the venue, identical on the ticket, the row sign and the chair.

Two common systems

Sequential or odd/even.

Sequential means seat 1 to n per row, counted in one direction. Odd/even means odd numbers on one side of the centre aisle, even on the other, both rising towards the outside. Sequential is easiest for occasional visitors; odd/even speeds up admission when every row is entered from two sides.

Count from where?

Seen from the stage or from the audience: just decide.

Many venues start “stage left” because seating plans are traditionally drawn that way. Others count from the audience’s view. Both are correct as long as the seating plan, the ticketing system and the signs use the same view. Define the view and write it into the house rules.

Rows

Numbers starting at the front, letters with many blocks.

Row 1 is the row at the stage. With several tiers or blocks the block belongs on the sign (“Block C, Row 11”), otherwise row 11 exists several times. The row sign sits on the aisle chair of every row, on both sides at centre aisles.

Example

Hall with centre aisle, 20 seats per row.

Sequential: seats 1 to 20 from left to right, the centre aisle lies between 10 and 11. Odd/even: left of the aisle 1, 3, 5 … 19 outwards, right 2, 4, 6 … 20 outwards. With a ticket “Row 7, Seat 14” the guest finds the right side immediately in both systems, in the second even without walking along the row.

What belongs on the sign

Row and seat, large and high-contrast.

Seat numbers are read up close, row signs from the aisle. Proven: bold sans-serif digits, black on white or white on black. If the sign should also carry the row (“R7 S14”), that can be printed on both sides of clip-on chair numbers; Braille for accessible seats can be added.

  • Define the system: sequential or odd/even
